The Visceral Mind

Exploring Psychology

The School of Psychology at Bangor University, Wales, UK is hosting a one-week summer school course in functional gross neuroanatomy for approximately 40 students this fall, from the 6th to the 10th of September, 2010.

Entitled “The Visceral Mind: A hands-on course in the neuroanatomy of cognition”, a key objective of our course is to provide the experience of anatomical examination of the human brain to students from institutions where this opportunity is not readily accessible. Therefore, the course is open to applicants world-wide from any institution, but priority will be given to those from outside the United States. Bursaries are available for course fees and travel assistance.

Click Here for full details of this exciting learning opportunity.

(Many thanks to Donna Pierz-Fennell for letting me know about the Visceral Mind summer school course).

Carl Rogers

Exploring Psychology

The latest addition to the psychology journal article collection provides a fascinating insight into the thinking of Carl Rogers, one of the most influential and eminent psychologists of the 20th Century.

Carl Rogers describes this particular paper as "a highly personal document, written primarily for myself, to clarify an issue which has become increasingly puzzling." An issue he describes as follows:

As I have acquired experience as a therapist, carrying on the exciting, rewarding experience of psychotherapy, and as I have worked as a scientific investigator to ferret out some of the truth about therapy, I have become increasingly conscious of the gap between these two roles. The better therapist I have become (as I believe I have), the more I have been vaguely aware of my complete subjectivity when I am at my best in this function, And as I have become a better investigator, more "hardheaded" and more scientific (as I believe I have) I have felt an increasing discomfort at the distance between the rigorous objectivity of myself as scientist and the almost mystical subjectivity of myself as therapist. This paper is the result.

The Psychology of Loneliness

Exploring Psychology

Just finished reading a fascinating research article by John T. Cacioppo et al, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology which examines the placement and spread of loneliness through social networks.

Among the study's findings were that the spread of loneliness was found to be stronger than the spread of perceived social connections, stronger for friends than family members, and stronger for women than for men.

Vox Populi (The Wisdom of Crowds) by Francis Galton (Free Full Text)

    Exploring Psychology

The latest addition to the psychology journal articles collection was inspired by the exploits of the acclaimed psychological illusionist Derren Brown, who created a real stir last week when he "predicted" the outcome of Britain's National Lottery.

See following link for full details, including a video of the "lottery prediction" live.

    Derren Brown

Derren Brown put forward the "Wisdom of Crowds" as a possible explantion of how he was able to achieve this apparently incredible feat; and in doing so, he drew explicitly on Vox Populi by Francis Galton.

    The Virtual Barber Shop

    Exploring Psychology

You may have already come across the virtual barber shop online e.g. Youtube. If so, you'll know what to expect and already appreciate what an amazing listening experience it is.

If you haven't listened to the virtual barber shop before, your ears are in for a treat, but before you let Luigi loose on your hair, a word or two to explain what it's all about.

The virtual barber shop is an extremely clever audio clip produced by QSound Labs and represents an example of a binaural recording.

What's So Special About A Binaural Recording?

Well, according to Aaron over at the Binaural Airwaves Blog, "...it is the most perceptually realistic recording technique in the world for humans. By capturing sound the way we hear as humans, our brains can most easily understand the subtle complexity of the sound and make sense of it."

How To Listen to the virtual barber shop For Full Effect

    1. It's essential you listen through headphones.

    2. Turn the volume up.

    3. Close your eyes while you listen.

    4. Eliminate all other sound (kids, pets, TV etc).

You can listen to the virtual barber shop via the Youtube video below but for maximum effect I'd recommend downloading the audio file and listening to it through your iPod/MP3 player, which you can do via the following link.
